I have to feed a cord and plug connected compressor package (2 motors / 1ph 208V) with a package FLA of 18A (nameplate). The factory installed plug is rated for 20A.

Per 210-23 A (1) "utilization equipment shall not exceed 80% of the branch circuit rating",
Per 210-21 B (1) you need a 30A receptacle for a 30A circuit.

What size branch circuit and receptacle can I use without modifying the compressor.

Thanks in advance

McGee,article 210.23(A)1 is for equipment not fastened in place.I take it your equipment is not portable?

(1) Cord-and-Plug-Connected Equipment Not Fastened in Place The rating of any one cord-and-plug-connected utilization equipment not fastened in place shall not exceed 80 percent of the branch-circuit ampere rating.

If your FLA is 18 amps, then you did not exceed the 20 rating of the plug.

(1) Single Receptacle on an Individual Branch Circuit A single receptacle installed on an individual branch circuit shall have an ampere rating not less than that of the branch circuit.

Just size the receptacle according to the plug on the unit. A 20 amp circuit with a 20 amp receptacle and a 20 amp unit plug.

So, to muddy the waters, does this apply to a data center server rack? Does "fastended in place" mean cannot be moved at all except removal for servicing? Which in the case of a server or server rack the same COULD apply.
