I am preparing to build a shop and have an existing spare 50 amp service in the main box. I have a 150 foot run for the shop and will have a liscenced electrician spot me on the install from work. I have some 600v rated 6 gauge wire(new) that is long enough for 3 pulls, that was left over from a power project next-door. Will this be large enough gauge to run a small 220 welder or compressor? I work on the electronics at the prison and am filling in as the electrician as we do not have one right now at our facility, please help

Feeder to separate building needs 4 conductors, while you can reground the neutral it is not recommended. The size conductor depends on the connected load and distance. 6 AWG may be ok.
Also the separate building will require a disconnecting means such as a loadcenter with main breaker and a grounding electrode system.
