If when installing a plasma tv in a bedroom you found a 20 ft energized coil of wire taped at the end upon further examination was aparently run from the switch box in the efort to sell the customer a future fan box above the bed after the basic install was complete. Do you A. use the other electricians feed which is not secured or in a box or B.do you run your own new feed from another location??

A little more info

A little more info

The feed was long enough to reach the middle of the room and the rx seemed upon examination to be about 10 yrs old when the last renovation was. devil on left shoulder angel on right shoulder.

why is there even a question ? put an old work box in the wall, wire it, get paid and leave. and in the process you even secured a floating wire for the customer for free.

then i know what to do

I'll tell you what I'd do. I'd use that feed. I don't understand what's "wrong" with it. Nothing, as far as I can tell. It might have been intended for another purpose, which never hashed out, apparently. This is akin to rerouting and re-purposing circuits in a commercial tenant refit, which is common and expected, most times. Plus, if you were doing this flat rate, you just made your week's pay.

So I did him a favor

So I did him a favor

Putting it in a box which just happened to be behind the new plasma tv, right??

That's the way I see it. You saved him money, more than likely, and mitigated a hazard. Two birds with one stone. Bravo.

If the taped ends had a tail, it's mine. Go ahead and use it.

The "other" electrician doesn't own that wire. The homeowner does. Let the owner know you found a run of wire you can use and see if he wants you to. Saves him money, saves you climbing round in a attic.

in reality

in reality

Saved me 2$ of wire and 15 min of finding a feed . I used it but left a loop in case of future problems to cut a box in. It just made me smile and I did feel a LITTLE guilt. Life is good!!
