See article 100 for the definitions.

Think of the Feeder as the trunk of a tree, and the Branch circuits as the branches of the tree.

And like Roger said, see Article 100.

does that make the bird in the tree a cord connected luminaire ?

FEEDER:
The circuit conductors that supply power to a branch-circuit overcurrent device or to a panel that contains such devices. The power may come from the service equipment, a separately derived system, or other power supply source.

BRANCH CIRCUIT:

I think of it this way: Start at the load, and work your way toward the source. You are on a "branch circuit," until you hit the first overcurrent device (this would actually be the last, not the first, but remember we are working backwards here). Next, start at the utility, and work your way into the facility. You are on the "service," until you hit the first overcurrent device. Any conductor between these two overcurrent devices is a "feeder."
