What's a good Telephone Butt Set for a Maintenance man to have these days?

Last time I was regularly using a Butt Set phones just had to have a dial tone and carry calls. Now they do a lot more. For now I just need to figure out why the phone works in the office but not in the shop but I might want to do more and continue to learn. What's a good Telephone Butt Set for a Maintenance man to have these days?

Is there a private switchboard/phone system involved?
The phones in the shop may actually be wired differently than the office phones.
It is getting harder to find office phone systems with a pure two wire analog interface to the actual phones. One giveaway is that a hands free set for the user has to be attached via an applique to the phone itself rather than directly to the phone line.
They may have specified analog phones for the office and digital for the shop for that reason.

If you're talking about POTS lines, then the Good Ol's Harris/Dracon TS21 is great, less that $50 on ebay. If you need to test digital system lines.... the tester depends on the phone system and technology and costs a few more dollars.

Both.

Both.

The County is all tied together and caller ID says all the calls come from one number even though the calls come from different offices in different parts of town. However, the precinct barns are just good old fashioned phone lines.

I personally like the harris ts22al as you can put it on a data line like an ISDN and not crash it like you can with the older sets. They can be had for under 100 if you look around.

I have a TS45 and a TS22. I prefer the 45 because it's rounded/ergonomic and doesn't jab you with corners while cradling it in your neck. It also has the DSL filter and won't let you butt in to a line with an active data connection.

My Harris unit has served me well going on thirty years now. Not sure what model number it is , but it sure has taken a beating and still performs flawlessly. Like a Greenlee hacksaw.

You really should start a new thread rather than hijacking a more or less inert old thread.
And you may not find a lot of help on what is primarily an NEC forum. Just sayin' ....
