Whats code say about heat trace

Thats a design issue based on the w/ft of the heat trace and ohm law. Mfgs have tables for the air temp, pipe insulation and so on. Dont' forget the GFP. We have 277 volt heat trace under a concrete pier that did not have GFP, it caught on fire, and no way to put it out (no fire boat(.

You should be able to google "heat trace", find a manufacturer, and download a design guide in a few minutes. Seems like Ray-chem is one manufaturer.

YOu can either get self-limiting heat trace (the hotter it gets, the less current it draws), or you can use a thermostat.
