Whats the best place to advertise to find a company to work for?

I've been posting my resume on craigslist for about a month now every week and have not gotten any returns.
I called a few places from the yellow pages but none take part time workers.

I'm 21 and really need some cash income at this point. I am finishing up my apprenticeship training classes at the MCVSD (mcvsd.org) in about 2 months which will give me the total 4 years needed.
On top of that I need to work with a company full time for at least a year before I can take the contractors exam.

I'm a great worker but don't have much on the resume other than the vocational and one other company I worked for full time in the summer last year.

Does anyone know of any good places online or elsewhere, (in central NJ) to post your resume for free or low prices which will help me get a part time job for now?

Thanks

Try tech. schools, preferably ones that have electrical apprenticeship classes.(like the one you are in?) They usually know of the larger companies looking for employees. Or the local shop.

Dave, You'll have to have your fingers do the walking in the phone book, call your local IBEW office, look in the want adds, and the leather hit the pavement. What Barbeer sugessted is good info. also. LOL

Being that I am in the hiring capacity the advice I would give you is basically what the others said.

I do not go to Craigslist looking for applicants they come to us. A phone call is fine to ask if we are hiring to save yourself some time and gas, but you will have to show up for the interview and drug screening.

Bring your resume with you but don't think it will carry much weight with your limited experience, it will be far more important to present yourself as courteous, respectful, ready to work, and willing to learn.

I don't know about NJ but in other areas the easy way to get part time work is to go through a staffing agency ( temp. employment ). There are companies that specialize in staffing of skilled trades and provide temp. employees to those that just need help for a short peroid of time. There is always the option to hire in full time if the company really needs you.

"I'm a great worker but don't have much on the resume other than the vocational and one other company I worked for full time in the summer last year."

I think your going to need more hours of working experience, brfore you can take the exam, it sounds like a full time job in the trade may be a better option.

I realize we are in the internet era but relying on craigslist to find a job will get you exactly where you are. Nowhere! Take a little bit more of an initiative and make some more calls. Get out and knock on some doors. Oh the youth of today they want everything handed to them. When I was your age...................:D

lol

yea ill try calling around some more. Maybe some companies have more openings now.

Quick bits of advice when looking for a job (I probably get about 10-15 calls a week from guys just like Dave85)

1) When you call up, don't say "are you hiring?" Ask for the person in charge of HR. Get a 15 sec sales pitch to explain your experience and what you can offer me. Unfortunately, you are not a seasoned electrician, so I won't be making money on you for a while. There has to be a compelling reason to hire you instead of the 10 other apprentices that come looking for a job every week.

2) Don't tell me you need a job. I don't care. Tell me why you want a job in this field and why you want to work for our company.

3) Don't embellish your abilities. My BS meter is pretty honed. I might give you a shot, but the truth will come out in a matter of hours.

4) Don't tell me that you have no real world experience, but only need 1 year before you can take your EC license. Why would I want someone who is green, and will require training, if he already plans on being gone in a year or so?

5) Be honest with yourself. If you are small and not strong, don't tell me you can do industial and pipe work (I'll be really pissed when I ask you to move some 2" EMT and you have to move it 1 stick at a time) If you don't understand the basics like, how is a 3 way wired, don't tell me you can do service work. If you are slower than frozen molasses, don't tell me that you can do resi new construction. know what you can and can't do, and be honest. We can train you to do other things, but if I think you can do them, but you really can't....well....

Things are a little slow in this area (central NJ) and if you don't take initiative and show a potential employer that you are a go getter, you can probably forget about getting a job until things pick up. Differentiate yourself, sell yourself and tell the company why they need you, and you have a shot.

Good luck, and unfortunately, no we are not hiring green apprentices right now.

You may try this:
Type out a simple cover letter or resum? with details on what you are hoping to accomplish and send it out to several companies and just wait to see what happens...if someone needs a part time apprentice they will contact you. I wouldn't call by phone, the person(s) doing the hiring probably don't have time to talk and they get calls like this all the time and have become bored to the point of not really listening. A simple letter or resum? will allow them to see what it is you want at their leisure.
I have had tremendous success doing just this.
Best of luck!

8 years ago I wanted a job in the electrical field. Why ? because I had an aptitude for it and liked working with my hands. I answered an ad in the newspaper and went in for an interview. The owner asked me what experience I had, I told him in home wiring NONE but I was in the electrical and electronics fields in the USAF. I promised him 2 things, 1 I would NEVER be late and 2. I DON"T make excuses. He didn't hire me he hired a guy with "experience" and the guy showed up on Tuesday missed Wed and Thursday and made excusses about it. He called me On Thursday evening and asked if I could start on Friday, I told him I would beable to start on Monday. 8 months after I started I was his # 3 guy (out of 12) and had received $5.25 in raises and never asked for one of them. I ofcource now work for myself as do 2 others who worked for him and we all still have a great professional relationship.

So look in the papers and make some calls and BE RELIABLE. you can go pretty far.

Yet some more great tips. Electric ans hate anyone who's late or makes excuses...I've seen it happen one too many times.

Thanks for the tips and tricks everyone. I'm sure it will be extremely helpful for me.

PLEASE move here, all you have to do is breath and you can get a job as, WELL JUST ABOUT ANYTHING you want to be. Heart surgeon (well maybe not that), but electrician for sure.

I once posted a sign at the wholesale house that read: "Wanted, Boss, must have own truck and tools, be dependable and reliable. No part time bosses need apply"

I got about 6 calls from that sign. The deal was is that the guy I had been working for for five years slowed down and he said I should find some temporary work. I worked for 3 guys in less than a month. they would all tell me how busy they were and then by the second week when I had got them all caught up they didn't need me any more. So what I would tell people when they called, if you don't have enough work to keep me busy or enough money to pay me what I'm worth then let's not wasted each others time.

luckly things picked up and I got to work for two more years for my original boss.

Craigs list will never find you a job. It may help some of us find a few customers, but right now there are plenty of electrical apprentices looking for jobs. As it is I have about 5 people I know that are always telling me, "Hey if you need any help I'd like to work for you."

Call more than a few places from the yellow pages and shell out $3-4 for a couple different Sunday papers.

Get an interview and show up with a positive pro-active attitude.

I have the same problem here in south Florida...if you have a pulse you can become (be) an electrician. Unfortunately, that's what many offer...a pulse (and maybe a few headaches).

yea, Brian said it, we have many jobs here the economy is doing very well

Local 26 IBEW is always looking for good men
