What's the code for phase taping ungrounded conductors?

We had six awg blue, and we phase taped it purple on the ends. Is that OK? I know you can't for a grounded conductor. Thank you for your help.

Basically you can identify/tape/paint an ungrounded conductor any color except green, green/yellow, white, and gray. I think those are all the colors you can't use, i might have missed some. But any color other than a grounding or grounded color.

You can NOT phase tape smaller than 4. Or you CAN phase tape larger than 6.

You can phase tape the ungrounded conductors any color that you want except green, white or gray.

I sometimes use random colors just to mess with the AHJ and or other electricians.

That first part only applies to grounded and grounding conductors... not ungrounded.

I feel the love from here. :(

Good point, I would add unless they're in a cable then there is no size limitation for re-identifying the white or gray conductor as an ungrounded conductor.

That post is ambiguous, so i'll rephrase it for you.

In the event that the conductors are in a multiconductor cable, you can re-identify any size with tape as needed.
Otherwise, 6 and smaller single conductors need to come with a continuous factory finish where required to be identified a certain color by code.

Ungrounded conductors, except where specifically required to have a color by code, can be taped any size, and any color not reserved, as long as they start with a color that isn't reserved. Unless state & local rules govern otherwise.

A high-leg is supposed to be orange. (Or purple in San Francisco). Single-conductor wiring for solar is allowed to be marked white for a grounded conductor when smaller than 4awg.

Those are the only other rules I can think of besides what's been mentioned.

Except for those and other local limits, you can pretty well choose any colors. But if there are two different voltage or phase systems in the building you need to make sure that you use those colors consistently IF you have chosen to identify system and phase using colors.
