I know I've seen it asked but I'm not sure how to search for it -- when did the residential GFCI requirement take effect? This is for Kitchen counter, bath & outdoors.

Thanks

Cool. That helps like breakfast lunch & dinner.

This now leads me to another question. I had a HO call me today and ask how much to install GFCI receptacles in an existing single family dwelling, per a Home Inspection report. GFCI's needed to be installed, noted in the report, for Kitchen counter, bathroom & outdoors.

The home was built in 1973 with AL wiring.

Would it be necessary to install the GFCI's if they were not required when the residence was built?

If anything was done too, such as a kitchen remodel then the GFCI's would have been required then or if the receptacles were replaced they should have been changed out.

I do agree that if no work was done then no upgrades are necessary. This is a very common mistake made by HI's, they don't check the permit files to see when the house was built and they want to inspect to the newest code.

Usually Home Inspectors will point out things that they think are not up to current code, but they are often actually prohibited by their state regulations from offering an opinion on whether they are grandfathered or not, referring that judgement to a licensed electrician to be brought in later.

I see that the outdoor receptacles will need to be replaced, the inside is my area of question.

I'll get the address from the HO when I call him back and I'll be able to search Permit records.

Thanks
