NFPA 79 does not mention fie suppression systems. NFPA 86 section 13.1 notes that "a study shall be conducted for fixed or portable fire protection systems for ovens, furnaces, and related equipment. This determination shall be based on a review of the fire hazards associated with the equipment. Were determined to be necessary, fixed or portable fire protection systems shall be provided."

Is there further guidance provided in other NFPA codes?

I've worked on machines where other industry standards required fire suppression, even when the machine had no heaters or significant fuel sources.

The only one I ever saw on a machine was a CNC machining center that was using ethanol as a cutting fluid.
