When do you specify vertical or horizontal lamping on downlights?

Vertical lamping takes up more ceiling space, but has better light distribution. It is also better for maintenance, easier to swap out lamps.

I typically specify vertical unless there is no room.

Hope this helps.

Vertical is more efficient (more lumens get out of the fixure). The distribution is also more consistent. This may not apply to some wallwashers which use a horizontal lamp and a special "kicker" reflector. Horizontal lamping, IMHO, is only for applications where you don't have the height available for vertical.

Ok, I will ask this I installed two 6" cans with eyeballs to light paintings on a wall above a fire place but due to the celing hight I can only get light to the bottom of the art. does any one know where I can get a horz. bracket that will fit the cans?

TRY a low voltage MR16 retrofit that will go into the can. What brand are you using? Most have a kit that will give you something more aimable with a small MR16 lamp.

Eyeballs are about the most useless piece of junk ever to be put on a can. They barely work and look like hell. There are much better options available these days.

Some HID lamps even last longer when used in a vertical position. Something to keep in mind when the architect you're working with wants tiny, invisible fixtures and you want to argue.

I am assuming these are incand fixtures. Swap out the trims with a wallwasher type. you will love the light distribution and the are nicer looking to boot.

sbrn33 said what I was thinking. Since you are only looking to accentuate the art you aren't concerned that some of the light may be lost inside the trim. The wall washers spray the wall with light. I just put a couple up in my aunt's house about a foot away from the wall on a 7.5 foot ceiling.
