When is a ceiling not a ceiling?

All, in regards to 400.8(5), a flexible cord is not allowed to be plugged in above a suspended ceiling.

That being said, what happens if the suspended "ceiling" doesn't have any tiles, just a grid? Kind of along the lines of a visual architectural break?

Thanks in advance. I wasn't sure if the grid counted as a ceiling.

In my opinion, this is Ok since the cord would be visible for its entire length.

But I give you odds someone is going to ask "What if they put the ceiling tiles in later?"

Suspended ceiling: A non-structural ceiling suspended below the overhead structural slab or from the structural elements of a building and not bearing on the walls.

Ceiling 1 a : the overhead inside lining of a room.

I believe what you are describing is a design element, not a ceiling dropped, suspended or other wise.

What if they put tiles in?

But really, what code compliant installation could you have with cord draped over the design element?

A wise man once said, "The police can't give speeding tickets to people who own sports cars because they might..."

The OP never stated that the grid installed was part of a listed drop ceiling assembly or a grid that is indeed a design element. If the later, I would have to assume that the EC would do a fine installation that any layman wouldn't notice and any electrician worth his salt would look up and think, "cool".

Sorry, I thought you all could read my mind as far as the details. The type of grid that is suspended is about 1.5 inches in cross section and two foot square openings, with no real way to put tiles on it, no edge for the tiles to set on. It's just a grid of white steel, about 2 feet below the hard ceiling.

What happened is the electrician installed some cords with strain reliefs on the ceiling, and later along came in the computer crew and had this grid installed afterwards. For what it's worth, the lighting fixtures are suspended at the grid level.

I was looking at it wondering if the grid installers unwittingly created a NEC conflict.

Again, thanks for the responses.

What if?????

What if?????

What If???? THAT'S NOT A VALID ARGUMENT!
Are there celing tiles shown on the prints? If there are ever tiles installed in the future hopefully that re-model will be permitted, and re inspected. at that time, the inspector needs to bring up the issue. That is when it will become a problem!
