Is there some guidelines for when it is better to specify running multiple conductors. I have a 480 VAC panelboard that has a 450 A main breaker. I could run 3-700 kcmil with #2 gnd in a 3 1/2 conduit. When does the wire get to large for easy installation. What other factors would make using multiple smaller conductors better?

I can't speak for ease of installation. But my design firm's standard feeder schedule has us specifying parallel conductors for feeders rated 400 amps or higher. Looking at the table (I keep a copy posted on my cubicle wall), I don't see any conductor size over 500 MCM.

Around here 700's would be hard to find since it not a conductor size used every day. You would likely need to use 750's due to availability. 750's are IMO at the upper limit as far as installation difficulties. If possible I would prefer multiple sets of a smaller conductor. You could pull 6-250's (2 sets) into the same 3.5" conduit with ease.
