Does anyone know what code soldering of K&T splices was first required? 394.56

Well got my hands on a 1947 code and it is not in there. Under knob and tube anyway.
Talked to a seinor inspector and he has seen more soldered splices fail than non soldered.
He thinks its better.
So looking like its grandfathered.

I don't think it was ever 'required,' though it was certainly standard practice. The ENC has required connections to be mechanically and electrically secure, and has not allowed solder to be the only means of mechanical connection, "forever.'

The humble wire-nut didn't really come into use until after WW2.

Related to this, the NEC has not required lengths of 'free conductors' or 'pigtails' all that long. You'll note that soldered connections are in smaller boxes, and often have no free wire at all.

It used to be that boxes weren't required for K&T splices and taps.

Right now, 110.14 requires all splices to be done with either 'devices identified for the use' or brazing, welding or soldering.

Just curious. What did the '47 code book say in 110.14 or it's equivalent?
