I see a lot of discussion about AFCI breakers but I can not find a reference stating when AFCI's were required in California. Help! Thanks!!!

Started in the 1999 NEC, with changes since then. Bedroom outlets to all outlets, branch circuit to combo type. Almost the entire dwelling unit now

To further answer the question, California adopted the 1999 NEC Nov 1, 2002. As the good doctor says, it required AFCI for circuits feeding bedroom outlets.

The 2014 code expanded the requirement to just about all living spaces. That was incorporated into the 2016 California code which was adopted Jan 1, 2017.

The 2017 NEC was incorporated into the CEC and adopted Jan 2020.
