Where to tie in water bond wire?

I have replaced a number of fuse boxes with breaker panels lately. As you might guess, these old services had no ground rod. So, I've been toning up my shoulders lately, as well.
In many cases, the water bond wire has exited the building quite close to where the new ground rod was driven. I've been putting the wire in pipe, and running it to the panel. From the panel, in a separate pipe, I've been running the GEC.

Though I've never seen it done, is there any reason I can't just tie the water bond directly to the ground rod?

Re: Where to tie in water bond wire?

If its metal pipe with the GEC it has to be bonded at both ends. Its much easier to use PVC conduit. If the water line is not a grounding electrode you can make the water bond at any accessible location.

Re: Where to tie in water bond wire?

I believe you would have to look at 250.52(A)(1). At the end it states that the bond would have to be within 5'. I may have missed the point of the question but the way I read it no it would be a violation if your not within the 5'.

Re: Where to tie in water bond wire?

Sorry for the bad typo. The last sentence should just states it is a violation because of the 5'. Loooooooooooooooong day

Re: Where to tie in water bond wire?

The 5 ft. rule only applies to metal underground water pipe being used as a grounding electrode conductor. I believe this topic is in regard to the bonding of the water pipe system covered in 250.104(A). :)

Re: Where to tie in water bond wire?

bph: You're quite right. I see now that 250.104(A)1 says "or to ... grounding electrode used."

Everyone: with your input, I wil run this past the AHJ when the next opportunity arises. (We all tend to equate 'different' with 'suspicous'.)
