My Local Electrical Inspector refered me to purchase a pocket guide book for formulas, conversions, tables and examples. One reference is the (Doctor Watts Shirt Pocket Electrical guide), and the other is; (Uglys Electrical reference guide). Both seem very good, but so far I'm favoring the DR Watts guide.

I have Uglys and use it for some things but I use the NEC for NEC tables, never know if the tables in uglys are correct or up to date.

Yea; I've been using the 2008 NEC Handbook, but a handbook for quick reference is great in a time bind.

I don't know if yours does or not or if you've noticed but mine has a note on the cover something along the lines of being revised for the 2005 code. Needs to be updated.

I've found small things like take up on 1 1/4" conduit being wrong but if you need help with that then there may be none for you. I've never taken the time to do hard line comparison between its tables and the ones in the code book. May have to do that some time. :)

Just got myself a new Ugly's at the beginning of the year updated to the new 2008 codes. Not sure if much has changed in it though, gave my old one away.

Mainly I've really only needed to pull it out in industrial settings dealing with motors, transformers and things. Residential and commercial I've got the 08 NEC on the dash in the van.

Do you ever worry that someone will hit you hard from behind and that
NEC will fly off the dash and be permanently enmeshed with your brain?

You'd have a harder time updating to the next version, I wouldn't doubt.

BTW, Yes, I also have UGLY's.

I don't have an updated Ugly's. I did find it a useful guide. In comparing Ugly's to the NEC, on occasion, I found Ugly's to be conservative (such as in sizing conduit) which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Nope, not really. Although I'm now thinking of the other things on my dash.

2008 uglys, 2005 nec handbook, 2008 code book. (had to keep the 05 for the GFCI, 210.8 that Iowa didn't adopt)

some places in the ugly's ref. the 05 NEC also. (I'm thinking motors?)

I also have a ton of books.

I even have the Xmas version of the NEC. ;)

i'm partial to ugly's since i have been using it for 30 years. i have found
all of the "errors" in it to be on the conservative side. i can live with that.

used to be that it was distributed thru union halls, but that changed,
and now home desperate sells them. good for george and sammy, they
have been doing this for a long time.... i've got a couple of them in the
garage from the late 1970's.
