Hey guys,
Ive been on my own for about 7 years. Now I'm planning to go to work for somebody else. I have already landed a pretty decent job with a busy local contractor. I haven't started working for him yet and a different, much larger contractor just offered me another job interview on Thursday. The job I'm interviewing for seems like it might be a much better deal for me than the one I already landed. What to do? Would I be a bad guy for telling the first contractor (who I already agreed to start work for in March) that I got a better offer?

If you accept the better offer, you could ensure no bridges are burned by telling them the truth, since it's likely they will find out anyway. They may want the chance to counter offer if feuding with the competitor.

I agree let the employer know what the deal is after all when it comes down to it the bottom line is the $$$$ Well usually that is the case.If you let them know what`s up they have a chance to counter offer and as said no bridges burnt.

John, I couldn't agree with you more. I have been an employer myself for the last few years. I've always encouraged the young guys that I had working for me to think about all their options while they are young. Construction is a tough business and it's getting tougher all the time. In fact that's why I'm going back to work for someone else now. I've just had it with all the red tape and agrravation. On the one hand it's great to not have any headaches from the boss, but the tradeoff is now you have all the bosses headaches.

Good luck.

I just can't see me working for anyone again (although I have thought about it and considered it many times). I'm too set in my ways. Getting older and being self employed (10+ years now) makes me difficult to employee.

Lou,
I used to feel the same way. A lot has changed for me this year though. I have a baby 1 year and 1 day old, a wife who wants to quit her job and take care of the baby, and an absolute need for health insurance. Working for someone else I will have much more time to spend with the fam. Also the benefits are sure nice to have. We used to get them from my wife's job like a lot of other guys are doing. Also, there's still a lot left for me to learn and I think I'll have more opportunities to do that working for someone else. It's funny how you start to take life a lot more seriously when kids enter the picture. Now it's much more a question of doing what I have to do than really doing what I would like to do, or what's fun

Makes perfect sense Tommy. I hope your new job works out great for you and your new family (oh yea, your boss too  ).

Best of luck. Keep us informed of how it goes.

Hey guys,
Just got home from the interview. Great company, very positive environment, plenty of overtime, any time you want it! It went really well. I think I got the job. I'll just have to wait a little bit for the pieces to fall into place.
