Going for my Limited license in NC. Without breaking the bank on the complete dvd set, which books do you guys recommend would be the most beneficial for exam prep?

I looked at Tom Henry's products, but it says "based on the 1999 Code with cross reference for 2002 and 2005." and seems like it would be outdated material. But his complete prep system was more reasonably priced, but would it still be ok for today's exams?

Ahhh I forgot. Sorry I just assume that most places test on the current code (05). Right now here in NC we're on the 05 code and as of Jan1 the 08 will be adopted.

Your state is pretty progressive. Most of jurisdictions here are still on 02 still, as of this post.

Baltimore county and Howard county are '05. Baltimore city is '99 (!) Anne Arundel County and City of Annapolis are '02

Yup, all new residential as of Jan1 will be required to have tamper resistant receptacles, tie bars on the mwbc's, ridiculous arc fault requirements, etc etc....

I'd take some local classes taught by local inspectors but right now I just don't have the time. All I can do right now is a couple hours each night before I go to bed for studying, which is why I want to go with a home study course.

The complete sets with the dvd's and all are pretty pricey. Are they really worth it or just overkill to what you can learn fairly well with just the study books?

I highly reccomend buying the complete set. They may be a bit pricey but they are well worth it. Plus at any point in your career you can pull them out and rewatch them if you run into a situation where you have forgotten something. Or if you know someone that is also considering taking a test you could split the cost and share them. I feel that I must add that these tapes are worth every penny!

Actually, it will most likely be July of 08 before it is adopted, that's if it is.

There will be some meetings in March on this issue.

Up until 05 NC's adoption was normally on 1/1 but the 05 was not adopted until March

If the 08 is adopted, (I think it will be) you can count on some amendments.

What are you basing that statement on?
I looked at the NC electrical board to see if there's any news there! Nothing unusual there. Well OK, no announcement, NC generally adopts it Code change 2-3 months after the first of the year, and that?s happened on the last two Code cycles.

Now it could well be a local AHJ that steps in front of the NC Board, but I don't know. I know my my fine City is not up to date I-net wise. Call downtown it'll be a different story.

The state board of insurance site is down, I could not reference that today.

Sorry guys I previously got some bad info for the start date of the 08 code. I just talked to the state electrical board and they said that the official start date for the 08 code in North Carolina will be July 1. That's when the 08 code will be implemented and the exams will have questions from the 08 code book.

Yankee, I went with the Master/Contractor Intermediate Library with the DVD's. So far it's been great, I can study with it any time I have free time, which isn't often.

So far, I'd recommend it.
