Which NEC do I follow?

I live in the NYC area and there is a question on the New York City 2011 code? Do I follow the NEC 2011 code or the 2008 NEC? NYC has the 2011 city Amendments but do I use this to correct the 2011 NEC book?
I'm trying to find answers to this question so I can use the right product to study on in Mike Holts study texts.

Is this question related to work in the 5 boroughs of NYC? If so they're still on the 2008 NEC with their own amendments.

The Current New York City Electrical Code is called the "2011 NYC Electrical Code" or "NYC Local Law 39 of 2011" and took full effect on July 1, 2011.

It is made up of the 2008 NEC with amendments found here https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/buildings/pdf/ll39of2011_electrical_code.pdf

They claim soon the 2018 version will be coming out, but who knows what it will be based on .....
