Can you bond a whirlpool tub motor to a ground rod? Are to the closet cold water pipe?? Are do you have to go to 5' of the main water line where it comes into the building. With the bare #8

are you asking about a hot tub where the water stays in it all the time or are you asking about this tub?

VII. Hydromassage Bathtubs
680.70 General.
Hydromassage bathtubs as defined in 680.2 shall comply with Part VII of this article. They shall not be required to comply with other parts of this article.

Hydromassage Bathtub. A permanently installed bathtub equipped with a recirculating piping system, pump, and associated equipment. It is designed so it can accept, circulate, and discharge water upon each use.

680.74 Bonding.
All metal piping systems and all grounded metal parts in contact with the circulating water shall be bonded together using a solid copper bonding jumper, insulated, covered, or bare, not smaller than 8 AWG. The bonding jumper shall be connected to the terminal on the circulating pump motor that is intended for this purpose. The bonding jumper shall not be required to be connected to a double insulated circulating pump motor. The 8 AWG or larger solid copper bonding jumper shall be required for equipotential bonding in the area of the hydromassage bathtub and shall not be required to be extended or attached to any remote panelboard, service equipment, or any electrode.

Mr. Monk,

A hot tub nor hydromassage tub need to be connected to earth. This connection would serve no purpose.

The BONDING you are referring to with the #8 conductor is to establish an equipotential grid at and about the hot tub or hydromassage tub area.

Carefully read the definitions in Article 100, 250.2, and throughout Article 680 to get a better understanding of the difference between bonding and grounding.
