Re: Who makes the best fittings?

EMT (especially steel): T&B or RACO

RGC, sealtite and other industrial-like stuff: Appleton

Cord grips: Hubbell/Killark

Plumbing: Nibco :) oops, wrong forum!

YMMV

Re: Who makes the best fittings?

Ok, this question comes up because I do a fair amount of fire alarm work and in my area, we are required to use steel fittings by local code.

I have encountered some steel EMT connectors that have a razor sharp throat (Topaz), and others where the locknut will not dig in and tighten up (Crouse Hinds).

And some die-cast compression connectors and couplings just refuse to tighten up.

I agree. My company has a deal directly with appleton, so we a forced to use them exclusively. I always love when the supply house screws up and substitutes a different brand. I have found that appletons fittings have a pretty sharp throat too. I always order fittings with the internal plastic bushings just for that reason. Also, the compression style fitting don't tighten all the way either

I much prefer OZ for those applications. The light zinc plating on the Appleton only lasts a year or two in industrial applications. The OZ fittings have a hot dipped galvanizing and hold up much better. Note, that Appleton and OZ are owned by the same company.

Re: Who makes the best fittings?

Just to set the record strait on this, I prefer Oz Gedney, but when I have to pay for it and it is not in the spec, I get them zinc neer fittings or something cheapo from Home Depot. Got to compete and be here next month...

Re: Who makes the best fittings?

my vote: Gedney for everything but EMT fittings, then Raco

Re: Who makes the best fittings?

Don,
I never knew that Oz had a HDG coat, I'll have to look into them for the next "corrosive" project.

I've never really used oz/gedney, as they don't seem to be as prevalent on the left coast, at least not at the supply houses I deal with.

Learn something here every day!

Re: Who makes the best fittings?

Anything BUT Neer and Topaz. The Neer fittings have too many burrs inside such that you often have to bang the fitting onto the pipe, and the Topaz ones I can bust just tightening them up.
