So I have this house I’m installing a generac backup generator for the whole house (200amp) and I was curious if I should be coming back out of the meter socket or I just run the feeder down to the panel in the basement. I’m still roughing the house but he isn’t sure when he will get the generator so he just wants to ready for future. The meter has the 200amp disconnect in it bc of the fact it’s a 3 story house and the panel is in the basement. He wants the generator on a different side of the house so do I go into the meter then put the transfer switch next to the meter or just pull the feeder into the basement next to the panel for the transfer switch? Does it really matter which way I do it?

If you're talking about a meter/main combo, I just did one about a year ago. The customer also wanted the generator on the opposite side of the house than the service. What I did was run the load wires from the meter/main through the basement to the ATS, which was mounted right next to the house panel. I then just nippled over to the panel from the ATS.
You could do this and stub out conduit for the feed from the genney when they get it.

So you just came into the building with a feeder from the side they wanted the generator and just put the transfer switch inside next to the main panel.

Yes
There is not much else you can do using a meter/main. You can't reroute/move wiring in them as they are factory installed.
I ran two conduits out to the genny, one for power and one for the control wires.

It doesn’t matter, Look at the job and see what makes the most sense. Intersect main feeder and go back out to the generator. I installed one next to the panel.
