I’m about to start my first whole house rewire job on a home from 1940. Most of my work has been in older homes that are being remodeled. But this is my first old home job where the electrical is not part of a remodel, it’s simply a rewire all on its own. Do I need to add additional receptacles to get the 6’ spacing as I would normally do with new construction or additions & remodels? We’re on the NEC 2017 here in Tennessee. Thanks.

Depend son your local building codes. Here, if 50% or more of the square footage is being renovated, the entire structure must be brought to present code requirements. For electrical only, I suggest discussing the cost options with the customer.

Neither the NEC or TN Electrical Code specifically addresses the issue. I have found many jurisdictions use the formula Larry posted above whereas some require any portion of the home where the wall covering has been removed (studs/joists exposed) must be brought up to present Code.
The answer lies with you local inspection agency.

If no walls, ceilings, or floors are being removed or opened up, I don't think you have to disturb the structure to add new boxes, wire, etc.
Most inspectors here go by that "rule" of thumb. Now if you're adding outlets, extending wiring, etc. the AFCI rules could apply. Might be a good thing to run this by your inspector and what you intend to do.
