Why does conduit body have smaller capacity than pipe?

According to table C.1 I can run five #2 XHHW conductors in 1.25" EMT. I bought a 1.25" T conduit body and it says inside "Max three #2". What gives?
 
Because a conduit body with conductors larger than #6 AWG need to have an opening equal to that of a pull box using the 6X (angle) and 8x (straight) sizing rules. The stamped condcutor sizes in the CB are somewhat relaxed from those minimum rules.
 
not sure about tees but for an LB they make a 'mogul LB' which is long enough to meet the bend radius rules and you can fill to the max conduit fill
 
lots of talk about conduit bodies... after seeing a job fail i now understand a old bosses disdain for any sized lb (or anything. hey, his rules) especially on feeders. wasnt my job but my company. it was on a walmart distribution center (HUGE- (6) service entrances..) DC solar panel feed to a combiner at grade level. it wouldn't of been as bad if they didn't try to save the 500kcm wire, it was destroyed during install. what a mess. if you've seen these dist centers I don't need to tell you how large they are (and how long the run was). live and learn but I will never use them... thanks to ol' angry Mike the heffe.. the wire theft from employees that followed was ridiculous. funny enough- It was when I first learned why- the big boss gave me a small 5' loop of the stuff for a Christmas bonus that was worth 300$... I had no idea!
