No, I don't intend to try it....

But in a quest to learn more about our 240 volt system, I've wondered if a 240 volt device with a 3 prong plug, such as a window air conditioner would work if it was missing the ground plug?

Yes it would but if a ground fault were to happen the OCP would never open and there would be 120 volts on the case of that air conditioner this is why we must ground.

A little more to ponder. As Hurk and Dereck say it will work fine, but as far as the fault and the case being charged at 120 volts is concerned, grounding would open the OCPD, but if we were on a raised wooden floor with no grounded surfaces in close proximity, it would pose no threat. ;)

Seems as though there is some "jest" being thrown around.

Sounds like my interpretation on some of my previous supervisors. If it works when the power is applied, it must be wired per Code.

Was actually over-supervised on such wirings.

For this one though, check 250.114(3)(a) and/or 250.114(4)(a).

"Hey, if it works when the power is applied, It must be wired per Code! ".
