Has anyone mounted a 5-30R or 6-30R power receptacle in a 3 X 2 X 3-1/2 device box? They make single gang cutouts for this but it seams tight to me.
Will a 5-30R or 6-30R fit in a 3 X 2 X 3-1/2 device box?

It will fit. It all depends on how well you want your trim out to go.

I think a better question is will the conductors fit?
I would use a 4-11/16" deep box with a single gang plaster ring if I had to have a single gang look.
