Will PA ever have a state license?

I recently passed the Allentown, PA Master Electrician exam and hope to get licensed in several other cities and municipalities throughout PA. However, this is a real pain in the rear and is quite costly $$$. Does anyone know if PA has any plans on having a single state license? :-? Sure would be easier...

It's been shot down every single try. Many of us Pennsylvanians still think that it should not require special permission from the state in order for us to earn our living.

So who's doing the shooting? Many other states have a single state license; just hard to believe good old PA would pass-up an opportunity to cash-in on another way to make a buck.

If there was a state license, would that keep those same municipalities from requiring their own licenses?

so.... you could then be required to spend the same bucks you are spending right, now plus some more for a state license....

I see your point; Maryland is like that.
I was thinking more along the lines of New Jersey where a single state license is all that is required; so I'm told.

They call it a privilege license in these parts, for the local city will require for one to work in there city and one better have it to get their stuff inspected... too.
Or consider it the right to pay, to do business in their fair city, including all businesses in general, IE a business license.

I always say Western PA is like going back in time 20 years. I think there should be a national license based off the NEC (who would think such a thing). Try moving from MD to TX being an electrician.

A national license would be great!!!
I'm just starting to work on getting licensed in as many states as possible and finding it a lot more involved than I had ever thought it would be. The company I work for does work throughout the US, Mexico, and Canada so they are paying for me to get licensed everywhere and anywhere.
Gonna be a lot of leg work...

Yeah it's pretty crazy you can have a Masters license in OH, WV, VA, NC, but you are not legally qualified to work in TX.

I hope your company is picking up the tab on all fees.

NASCLA has been working on a national exam for commercial building contractors for years, and I understand that it is nearly complete. The question is though- how many states will accept it? Also, it does not appear that there will be one for electrical contractors anytime soon.

My company is paying for all fees, reference materials, and continuing education units-when that starts. I can see when you get involved in several licenses how expensive it becomes.
Glad I'm not footing the bill...:)

By the time you apply for the tests, study, take the tests, take CEU classes for the ones you passed last year, etc, I hope your company doesn't expect you to do any work for a few years.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

You're right- I'm finding out rather quickly how involved this process is! Regardless, my company claims it is an overall cost savings for them.
We will see...

Thanks- lot's of good info here...

I'm a residential electrician in the state of Indiana and we have to have a license for various county's we work in and some county's you don't even have to have a license so any Jake leg can do the work then i get to go back and fix it but for the ones you do then you got to get a bond for that county take a test for that county and thats all money if i only do one job a year in that county if it is a small job it is hardly Worth it. we have been pushing for a state license for years, but i think it will never happen because of unions and the money that the county's make in revenue with there not being a state license which makes it hard on the small business man:
