Is there any consistency here or does it vary from unit to unit. I cant recall what i have seen.Roughing in a house today and am providing a few dedicated receps for ac's...

My AC cord is on the left, but my receptacle is on the right. It really isn't a big deal to me. The receptacle isn't dedicated for the AC, it's just a wall receptacle.

50-50-90. As long as the cord reaches. I would go right side; every PTAC (I know you dont have a PTAC, but a window unit) I've seen has a right side cord. Maybe a quick peek on-line at the expected window unit model before you rough in...

The. Friedrich Chill I recently installed had the cord on the right, but I see online that their Kuhl series has them on the left.

You can reroute them along the bottom of the case, to exit the other corner, which I think many other brands also support. But those cords get pretty short pretty fast.

Good advice. Ask the customer for the model # and they'll appreciate you looking out for them.

Put it in the center?

:D

Customer will complain that the cord crosses the window sill. :D I gotta think anyone planning window units isnt too concerned with receptacle placement, as long as it reaches.

Dont forget new ACs have those big, goofy fault detector plugs on them. Mounting the recep ground up (*ducks tomatoes*) may make it look neater when it's all said and done.

and forget looking online, I checked half a dozen different models across 3 mfg and not one pic or spec showed the cord side.

Mine has one of those, and when the ground pin is on the bottom, the cord comes out of the top of the plug. Also, the writing on the plug is right side up with the ground pin down.

lol, always an exception to everything. until now, all of the AC plugs I have seen with trip/resets had to cord coming from the other side, i.e., ground side.

Since this is quickly becoming a ground up/down debate, I will bow out here. ;)

Only thing with putting the recep centered under the window is it's more work drilling out the 4 king/jack studs under the window than if you go beside it. No idea what framing code is, just easier to go one side or another, unless the homerun is going straight down thru the bottom plate.

$1 says Ethan has already installed the boxes 4 hours ago and has moved onto other things. :D

LOL  Actually I didnt install them. I ran out of time. Going down to Georgia tomorrow to work on a 1.3 meg solar project for 3-4 weeks. This resi job is run by a couple of non trades people for their uncle or something. They think spray foam is around the corner.....I'll be its still not in when I get back, and even if it is its 3 inch of closed cell in a 2X6 so I can squeeze the few things i didnt get to in :)

I guess I havnt provided for widow air conditioners much since I was kinda stumped on where to put the plug. I think I usually go for under the window, but sometimes there isnt much room and the height wont match the other receps.

Famous last words... I know better than to make that bet. Murphy follows me around with one hand on my shoulder. One hand, no problem, two hands, I'm worried... no hands, he's getting a running start.* If in doubt I'd have put them on both sides and been done with it.

You work on side projects locally involving small resi, and go out of state for large industrial projects? Did you learn to clone yourself? Time travel?

I noticed that! It's like they don't have cords at all.

They sure do look nicer that way, but I'm pretty sure that Tesla-style wireless power transfer isn't one of the Chapter 3 methods.

Most of our customers couldnt use window units if they wanted; HOA would have a fit and a violation notice delivered before sundown.

*Last time I dealt with spray foam was a customer who we did an entire house remodel for last year. Last year, the attic was empty, tongue and groove flooring, no spray foam. This year, they want "one more thing". Knowing the attic, I figured piece of cake.

In that year, they spray foamed the entire thing, jboxes, rafters, floors, and all about 12" thick, installed 1/4"ply over the existing flooring, put in 8 large metal racks, and stuffed 3 houses worth of junk in there. A drop hit my shoulder; it was Murphy, laughing so hard he was in tears.

I took all 5 of our (various mfr) window units out yesterday while winterizing the house. For whatever it's worth, all cords were on left sides.

The power cord entry on any appliance is almost always closest to the on/ off switch or controls unless it has a fuse, in which case, it will most likely enter there.

If you can see a picture of an appliance and it does not show the cord, look to where the controls are and assume it's going to be on that side. More often than not, you'll be correct.
