Wire Difference??

Older wire is obviously different from what is currently available---much softer. However is there any difference say in #12 THHN bought at different big box stores? Is the wire different if it comes from an electrical supply? Prices, of course, differ, but what about quality?

I have never heard of a problem with wire bought at the big box stores.

Neither have I.

The wire sold at the big box stores is the same wire that you buy at a supply house.

This is closely related to the rumor that the devices the big boxes sell are somehow inferior to those sold at the supply houses. The only difference is the packaging and maybe the UPC.
