Hello all,
I'm installing a 125A subpanel in my garage. I'm adding an electrical tankless water heater (80amp).
There is currently a small 60A subpanel there now, using NM 8-3.
In looking in Code-Check it is saying that I'll need Romex AWG 1/0, or Service Conductors AWG 2.
Excuse my ignorance but I want to make sure I understand the difference. ROMEX is the insulated wires in another outer insulation like NM style house wire (and is what is currently supplying the 60A subpanel with the NM 8-3).
Is the "Service Conductors" they refer to just the single insulated 2 AWG copper wire (all "black") that I see at my local Lowes store? I don't see anything approaching such a large guage in a ROMEX/NM style (and I want to stay away from Aluminum)
So if I use the Single "Service Conductor" wiring, is there any code requirements that these wires be different colors, or can I run three 2AWG wires (all black) together to supply the 125AMP subpanel?
I only need the three wire (poz, poz, neutral) correct, because I have to run a seperate ground with an 8AWG protected wire for the sub-panel?
I'm running this wire from a 125A breaker in my main box, across my attic, and I'll probably put them in a grey electrical PVC conduit. Is there any issue with putting all three wires together in the same PVC conduit (I would think that would even be required?).
Thanks for any advice anyone could give!!!
