What experiences have members had with alternates to wire nuts, such as Push-In Connectors by Ideal or Wall-Nuts by Wago?

Re: Wire Nut Eliminators

I have only heard that the Wago connectors are "considered" to be loose. I have heard that electricians have opened J-boxes to only find that they pull off easy or just plain fall off.
Not my opinion, nor have I experienced first hand. Only passing on what has been passed to me.

Re: Wire Nut Eliminators

I limited use of the Ideal Push-In's and so far plan on continuing to use them every chance I can. The one thing I would comment is to closely observe the recommended strip length and do a pull test of each wire. We used all #14awg stranded wire.

My experience with these guys is that observing the proper strip length is absolutely key. More than once I've seen Wago's not stripped far enough, which felt tight at first tug, suddenly come off with ease.

IMO they really aren't a suitable and lasting alternative to wire nuts.

the ideal ones that we got,say solid wire only. we put 200 amps on one of these just to test it, and the insulation of the wire and the plastic case melted, but the connection remained.

Halo recessed cans now come with these connectors as a standard connection means, more than once I have found these connections have slipped out.Mostly on the factory tinned wires to the light bell.I am sure that the installer neglected to double check the termination.I vote for wire nuts

Re: Wire Nut Eliminators

Paul I feel your test is not much help.

In real life they will be loaded (heated) and unloaded (cooled) IMO this will cause them to loose there grip.

With all that we have to say about back stabbed outlets and whether we should pre-twist wires before using a wire nut, I am amazed these things are finding favor.

I will stick to wire nuts, the only place I do use these push in connectors are for changing ballasts(small current loads), I have a bunch of these that I took of hi hats that came with them as Wayne described.

Re: Wire Nut Eliminators

We only use them in the Halo cans that come with them already installed. Would not want to use them under any great load. If you can't back stab a recepticle, then why are these allowed?
Doesn't make alot of since to me. Would like to go back to a two or three year old house with push-ins and see what they look like. Wire nut the way to go.
