Wee don't need no steekeen' wire nuts!

Found this today. I'm assuming it's a 120/240 UF feeding a detached garage.

Not only are the two hots bare, but the neutral is connected to a separate NM cable. I'll investigate it more Monday.

Yeah, the neutral is really baffling me. Why would you route it outside the circuit? If this is a real 120/240 MWBC, what could you do to the neutral that's beneficial?

WOW maybe the same guy did this. Same thing, branch circuit in UF feeding the garage, exposed in the basement, no cover, and energized.

Without knowing where those cables go, I can only speculate. Maybe one of those "three ways" that provides power to the garage and a three-way function to control a light with only three conductors?:eek:hmy:

As I see it, the un-capped red and black conductors feed through the box, and the neutral is interrupted by what appears to be a switch loop.

I'm wondering if it's not a MWBC, but they're using the black or red as a neutral, and the white is a switch leg to turn on a light from the house.

I am thinking the 3 conductor cables go to 3 way switches. The 2 conductor is the switch loop from the light fixture which is where the circuit is powered.

Just a possibility.

Outside of no stinking wire nuts and no EGC's, the logic of what is there could be the two wire cable is the supply voltage, goes to two switches on white and back on black/red, then feeds two separately switched loads.

Messy to say the least.

Lucky for us they left plenty of free wire to work with!
"See it works, we don't need one of them high dollar illektrisons!".
