Is there any code limitations using adapters to reduce the wire size to fit into lugs of a breaker?

We have 2 sets of 600kcm that need to fit into an 600 amp breaker with lugs for 2-500kcm.

We want to use a reducer such as these http://www.greaves-usa.com/pdf/ReduceR%20Color%20Sheet.pdf.

If we had an existing 800 amp breaker with 500kcm lugs would we be able to reduce this down with adapters?

you should be able to replace the lugs on the breaker. They usally don't come factory because of the bending radius. ( in some cases). You'll also have to watch the dimension of the adaptors to see if they would fit side by side in the breaker.

the brochure notes that the item is listed by CSA, but doesn't mention UL or any other lab. Is this ok with your ahj ?

No, they are rated for conductors over sized for voltage drop, Look at the fine print just under the product name. A factory lug on an 800 amp breaker should fit nothing less then twin 600 kcmil, unless it was ordered with 500 kcmil lugs under the "one size up rule" and had a calculated load of less then 760 amp.

we accept any third party label as long as they are qualified to list that product.

William, that isn't correct though, Click here for the NC accepted testing labs and their categories of testing.

That list and all it's categories seems like something that could keep a PM busy with a large complex job like a hospital. :(

Even though it may seem that way, it is not normally the case.

Most of the standard items are listed by UL, ETL, and / or CSA.

When the medical equipment comes into play it is the manufacurer that is responsible for this. We bring this to everyones attention pre-construction or early on in the project. We have had jobs where manufacturers have had to have Medical equipment and some controllers field evaluated.

That is the list that we go by. So how am I wrong?

and I'm pretty sure that not all testing labs are included in that list even if they are qualified to list a product somewhere else.

If the third party listing is not on that list it doesn't matter to me.We don't exept any thing that isn't on the list.

And that's what I was talking about, so saying "we accept any third party label" with out qualifying the third parties you can acept is not exactly a correct statement is it?
