What determines the wire size required for a regular 50amp range circuit? Is 8-3 W/G acceptable per the NEC. Where does it say what size is required and how to determine that. Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Do you have access to a NEC Code book?

It is acceptable to install a 40 ampere overcurrent device with 8-3 W/G Cu cable to a 50 ampere range receptacle. You need to verify that the range may be fed with a 40 ampere circuit in accordance with 220.55. If you need a 50 ampere circuit, you must go to 6-3 W/G Cu cable to a 50 ampere range receptacle.
