During kitchen remodeling I discovered a 20 amp wall outlet circuit using #12 wire had a lighting switch run from it with #14 wire. Is this legal and safe. I live in Cincinnati OH Hamilton Co.

Re: Wire sizes

The code requires that #14 be protected at no more than a 15 amp breaker in most cases. If this is a 20amp circuit, the #14 is a violation.

Re: Wire sizes

Is it legal? Its not done to code. Has your area adopted an electrical code?

Is it safe? The NEC is a min. safety code.

Re: Wire sizes

In residential applications, 14 awg is restricted to overcurrent protection of 15 amps maximum - 240.4(D)&(E): 210.19(4).
This includes the tails used when splicing for 'pigtails'.
