Wire Sizing

A simple question but to confirm I am not violating code; In a control panel branch circuit being fed by a 40 amp - 12 VDC power supply, the wire size is determined by the size of the breaker it is feeding and not by the supply current. Is this correct? I have only one 6 amp circuit breaker being fed from this power supply but it feels odd to have 40 amps available and only use a 16 or 18 AWG wire to feed the breaker.

Re: Wire Sizing

With DC cicuits the size of the wire is typically much larger than AC to allow for voltage drop, at 12 vdc.
The wire would be protected at its ampacity.
