I would like to put a home generator system in for a customer. We have instructions from the generator mfg. We have seen many other companies install generators with emergency sub panels.
The question is, can we wire tie inside the main disribution panel to the emergency sub panel? We have installed and our installations were inspected by many town's electrical inpectors (and passed). For the first time we have an inspector that said we can not do that.
If this is acceptable, what articale can I look up in the NEC 2005 code book to prove it to the inspector?
Thank you for your response,
Keith

There is no rule that says you can't and in fact the 2008 NEC requires grouping of MWBC by cable ties.
At least I think you are asking about cable ties.

How many wires are you tying? Perhaps he's worrying about thermal derating if you've got more than 9 current carrying conductors in a bundle which is also more than 24" long.

Are you asking about using wire ties? or are you asking about installing normal conductors with emergency conductors?

I think he means splicing in the original panel, which Ive done and seen done a ton of times in generator installs when the generator comes with its own transfer switch panel. Couldnt tell you a code reference though.

I agree with 480; it's encumbent upon him to quote the violation.

I believe he means tying electrically, as in the thread title, and not using ty-wraps.

I don't know if this is what you are talking about or the inspector is talking but if you have a code workbook 700.12 Sources of Power. In the part that explains what the sectionis saying, the last sentence says " provision for disconnecting means and current protection are to be provided for emergency systems as required by Article 230. Maybe this what he is talking about. Hope this help.

Article 700 does not apply to home generators...they are covered by Article 702.
