I have a friend who just bought a new house. It has a gas fireplace with a remote switch to turn it on. He wants to know if it's possible to have a remote controlled switch installed. Either pemanent or by handheld remote. I found a Leviton 6696-I that looks like it would work. However, I cannot tell if this switch uses the 120 VAC located at the switching station for power. It does take batteries. If it needs the 120 VAC then it won't work.

Any thoughts or ideas???

Many of these units come with a Piezo controlled ignitor and some even come with a TV type remote control with a thermostat built in depending on how elaborate a unit it is. Usually, the only time you need 120 vac is if the unit has a fan to blow hot air into the room. If your friend goes back to the fireplace manufacturer or distributor they may be able to tell him what products are available.

From what I gather in your post there was a thermostat wire run to a junction box and a wall switch alongside of the fireplace. If the fireplace manufacturer doesn't have a product you can use you may have to go to an alarm supply or X-10 to get a battery operated wall unit.
