That will depend on your local codes. Fire marshal in this area allows them for in home licensed day care.

There are some towns around here that require hardwired smokes and will make you retrofit them in a house to sell it.

Its maddening a $1000+(including drywall repairs) to retrofit hardwire smokes to complete the sale of a 3 story house.

I would call that abuse of powers. Should be up to the buyer what he buys. So keep the house and live in it for next 20 years and they don't care ?
