Hi I have wiremold raceway on my walls.
is it NEC code to cover raceway with drywall
or do I have to take the raceway off the walls
and rewire and then drywall.
Thank you.

Re: Wiremold

Are you really an electrician?

Re: Wiremold

Stingray, here is the article, nothing like cut, copy, paste! Article 388 is for nonmetalic raceway which basically says the same thing about concealed raceways.

386.12 Uses Not Permitted.
Surface metal raceways shall not be used in the following:
(1) Where subject to severe physical damage, unless otherwise approved
(2) Where the voltage is 300 volts or more between conductors, unless the metal has a thickness of not less than 1.02 mm (0.040 in.) nominal
(3) Where subject to corrosive vapors
(4) In hoistways
(5) Where concealed, except as permitted in 386.10

386.10 Uses Permitted.
The use of surface metal raceways shall be permitted in the following:
(1) In dry locations.
(2) In Class I, Division 2 hazardous (classified) locations as permitted in 501.4(B)(3).
(3) Under raised floors, as permitted in 645.5(D)(2).
(4) Extension through walls and floors. Surface metal raceway shall be permitted to pass transversely through dry walls, dry partitions, and dry floors if the length passing through is unbroken. Access to the conductors shall be maintained on both sides of the wall, partition, or floor.

Re: Wiremold

That Article says it can be concealed as long as it's dry. ;)

They need to get rid of 386.10(1)and revise 386.12 to include damp or wet locations.

I can understand the confusion if you are not familiar.

Re: Wiremold

To me there is a big difference between passing through a wall as 386.10(4) allows and concealing a whole installation as I believe Stingray is asking about.

Along with a violation of 386.10(4) you would also be violating 300.15(A)

300.15(A) Wiring Methods with Interior Access.
A box or conduit body shall not be required for each splice, junction, switch, pull, termination, or outlet points in wiring methods with removable covers, such as wireways, multioutlet assemblies, auxiliary gutters, and surface raceways. The covers shall be accessible after installation.
Every fitting in wiremold raceway has a removable cover for access to the conductors for pull points.

I not only agree with your answer, but would like to say to those who may not have as much experience in reading and 'trying to understand' the NEC;
There is usually another Section of the code that will pertain to the installation and if you read the NEC strictly for answers to the question you have, it can sometimes be very confusing.
Bob's answer shows that he has a keen sense of the other Articles and sections of those articles. It takes much time and effort to reach that level, and also networking with others who are also interested in the industry. He is not the only one, there are others who also have shown their proficiency here. It is good to see!!
Sometimes when I myself think I have a thorough understanding will see a comment on these posts that really makes me think. There are so many variables and the people here have such a varied backround, that it really pays to read what they have to say. I have expanded my learning here tremendously.
Thanks to all the 'guys' here who have helped me!!!

Pierre thank you for the kind words, for me the biggest boost to my limited knowledge of the NEC has been the networking with the others at these forums.

The members here are sharp and come from such diverse backgrounds that you can not help but learn something new if pay attention to what is posted.

Take yourself for instance along with your great electrical background I could ask you about trucks and diesel engines.

Take care, and thanks to all those that have taught me something. :)
