There is a specific requirement for using stranded wire to wire the spray boot?
Can be used solid cooper wire?

Thanks
Mike

Re: Wirin a spray boot for an auto shop

The interior of a spray booth is a Class 1, Division 1 hazardous location. 505.15(B) places restrictions on the raceways and cables involved, but doesn't appear to place restrictions on the type of conductors used in that raceway.

Given my utter lack of expertise in this area, I sure hope somebody comes along to correct me if I'm wrong. :D

I'll correct your citation George.

NEC 2002 Section 516.4(A) refers back to Art 501. You identified the interior as Division 1 then cited the Zone wiring methods. You should have referred to 501.4(A). The two systems don't mix and match well unless you know exactly what you're doing; very people few do.

The 2005 NEC now recognizes Zone systems for spray applications.

In any case, there is no specific requirement for either stranded or solid conductors. In fact, if you read the FPN No. 2 to 501.5, you may draw the conclusion that solid is preferred. This is not true. IMO the FPN is almost pure bunk designed to sell compact conductors.

Just about. Those under NFPA 33-2000 , Standard for Spray Application Using Flammable and Combustible Materials , or NFPA 34-2000 , Standard for Dipping and Coating Processes Using Flammable or Combustible Liquids. definitely are. See Art 516.

I am wondering if this is wire that will be flexed a lot (i.e. attached to a moving part). Wouldn't that require stranded wire? The question didn't give much detail :)

In that case you're looking at 501.4(A)(2) and 501.11. But those are permissives rather than requirements.
