Hi Guys, i have to wire a fabric cutting machine from Italy with no spec. I was told by the owner it was working in Canada and was shipped here last week. Its has no nameplate just a sticker that says 550 volts/ 60 hertz / with no amperage reading. I have a 3 phase 120/208 panel about 20 ft away. Im thinking some step up trans to get me to 480 volts and then a buck boost transformer to go to 550 volts. Also i forgot to mention it has a 30 amp disconect attached to the machine with 3 # 10 wires and a ground. Any input would be helpful at this point... Thanks in advance.:cry:

I used to work on fabric cutting machines. They were French made machines. I don't know what you have but the ones I worked on were CAM machines (which would have little to do with the supply needs) that had a vacuum system in them to hold the fabric down. The vacuum was operated from a turbine and that is what required most of the voltage. Actually we fed it with 400V transformed from 208V and also 220V stepped from 208V.
I could go on, but not knowing what you have it would be pointless. My suggestion would be to call whoever had the machine in Canada and ask them how they had it connected and what the amp draw is. Also ask what size the OCPD was from the panel.
 
I've had to do this for some Canadian welding and sheet metal formers, but the service I had was a 240 volt delta, so backfeeding a 480 volt to 120/208 transformer boosted it up to almost 600 volt, so I had to back down the taps to 575. At 208, you may be able to do the same to get the 550 volts.
