Wiring for Ceiling Fan

Split-entry home with ceiling fan upstairs(attic directly above). They have 12-2 but now want to control light and fan separately from wall switch. Should I abandon existing 12-2 and install 12-3, or can I add a single conductor from switch to ceiling box?

You need to run a 12/3 nm to the box. You cannot run a single conductor

It's kind of pricey, but there are plenty of companies who make something similar.

That price is likely still less then what it takes to get new cable(s) to the switch location.

Not sure what I have in mine--But it is a Hunter thing that when you turn on the switch it turns on the light--off then back on gives light and fan--off then back on again gives just fan--and then back to the start
