Would it be a code violation to run romex thru a sheetrock ceiling for a furnace in a little self contained closet without sleeving it. Its a vertical mount system

Sounds like it would not be subject to physical damage if the closet is not also used for storage.
But would it be fastened to the drywall? How long a length between support points?

Remember, that has to be a dedicated/individual circuit.

422.12 Central Heating Equipment. Central heating
equipment other than fixed electric space-heating equipment
shall be supplied by an individual branch circuit.

Its probally no more than 10 -12 inches from ceiling to top of unit

I believe you would still need 1 strap.

Where is the disco for the furnace?

Correct, if you follow the code to the letter - they need secured within 12 inches of the connector, if that is impractical - it is totally a judgement call.

Whether or not they need additional physical protection is also a judgement call. Some sleeve them just because they think it looks more professional, though that is a judgement call as well.

Here in southern IN, all I see is furnaces and water heaters roped in with loose romex stubbed out of the drywall. I guess it's considered acceptable.

Why not just mount your switch in a metal box and use a short sleeve of emt until it gets into the wall?
