When wiring light fixtures i always used ready made fixture whips that were already 6ft long and contained a smaller gaged wire(either 16 or 18). I thought the whip was 6ft long because of connecting a smaller gauged wire to a bigger wire(12). Can any wiring to a light fixture be longer than 6ft?

Stocky, welcome to the zoo!

Side note: reduced-gauge whips are to supply only a single fixture, and not to feed a fixture which is feeding another fixture.

Thank all you guys for the welcom,as this support is very helpful in so many ways. I guess what i'm really trying to understand is "do i have to make 6ft whips with 12/2 ac cable to feed can lights, fluorescent fixtures and the such in a lift out ceiling when the ac cable is being run up to 100ft lengths?" If so why?

Because they're branch-circuit conductors at that point. That they supply fixtures doesn't automatically mean that they're fixture wires, especially any one whip that supplies more than one fixture.
