310.5 shows the minimum sized conductors that can be used as a general rule. #14 AWG copper is the smallest branch circuit conductor you can run.

Now Fixture wires are permitted to be #18 AWG (See 402.6) but if you are daisy chaining 6 fixtures together the conductors that you are using to connect the fixtures together would be branch circuit conductors.

A row of fixtures installed end to end could use #18 AWG up to 50' in length. {240.5(B)(2)(1)}
