wiring protected from physical damage

Wiring in a garage that has no finished wall covering,if the wiring is following the stud and stapled back more than an 1-1/4 in from the stud face considered protected from physical damage as per NEC ? Or should all wiring in a garage be protected by conduit or some form of shield no matter how installed in the walls of a garage that has no finished wall covering,ie;(exposed stud framing )?

If there is going to be no wall coverings the wiring method is exposed and will require protection against physical damage or a wiring method that does not need protection can be installed.
