Hi, I have wires coming into a cabinet, which can carry up 400 amps. Right now the size of the wire is 250 KCMIL x 2. the longest run inside the cabinet is 11 inches. Is there any way I can down size the wire (inside cabinet only) and still be able to carry that amount of current (400A) with out breaking any NEC rules? The cabinet is being built to UL508A standards. The reason for this question is the difficulty of bending the wires.
Thanks
Juan

You said that you have 250 kcmil x 2. Is that two sets of some quantity of 250 or just two wires that are 250 kcmil ?

That would make all of the difference.

Re: Wiring Runs inside Cabinet.

Your original post is unclear, but if you have 2 sets of 250kcmil in parallel going into the cabinet you could splice a #3/0 to each 250kcmil and still have a rating of 400 amps.

that was your message.
That is 2 wires that are 250 kcmil which will run (in parallel) for no more than 13 inches. The current going through them is 400A constantly. My question is is this the right size or not? How can I calculate the right size? What is the procedure you would follow to calculate it? Remember is all inside a cabinet and the longest run is 13 inches.
Thanks and hope you can help me.
Juan
