I need to get a wire from a residential attic to a basement 3 floors down. The only access is inside a brick chimney that as a liner for an active natural gas water heater that shares the same chimney flue.

This seems real wrong to me. Is there ANY code that would actually allow this? If it were allowed I clearly would need to oversize based on ambient heat.

Would love any input and specific code articles.

Thanks!

Rob

I would not run the wire thru the flue at any rate. Find another way or pipe it up on the outside of the house near a gutter downspout or some other inconspicuous place

One time we ran high temp fiberglass jacket cable under an industrial furnace of a glass company. If you decide to do it you should run high temp cable.

Go old school like I was taught with a jack chain alongside a plumbing stack.
I was taught that same trick. I'll never forget the time I found one in my bosses bag one day and said what's this? He showed me I thought he was a genius
